Peter Brimelow’s Remarks At The Reception Following Maggy’s Funeral, February 13, 2004

A homily preached at the Funeral of Margaret Laws Brimelow by the Revd Robert L. Ficks III at Saint John’s Church, Washington, Connecticut on February 13, 2004

Peter Brimelow writes [February 9]: A heartfelt thanks to the large number of readers who have written from all over the world to express their condolences on Maggy’s passing. In response to queries, the funeral will be held at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, 78 Green Hill Road, Washington, CT, Friday, February 13 at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund at St. John’s Church.

Much of art is devoted to these moments; however, those of you who knew Maggy will understand why what is running through my head as I think of her now is this piece of what I suppose is near-doggerel by George Orwell:

But the thing that I saw in your face

No power can disinherit:

No bomb that ever burst

Shatters the crystal spirit. .

I am grateful to our old friend David Frum, and to my former colleagues atNational Review, for capturing something of this in a graceful tribute.
