I recently went to see Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life" with some old friends, and after the movie the conversation turned to other great films about childhood. My buddy brought up an old classic, "A Christmas Story" and, later that night, hoping to use the wonders of the internet to find out all kinds of trivia and little known facts about the film, I followed a link on Wikipedia to the director Bob Clark's page. I wanted to see if he would be having a hand in any stage productions of "A Christmas Story" or possibly a sequel. Also, I was just curious about the rest of his filmography. I was redirected to this chestnut instead:
"Clark and his son, Ariel Hanrath-Clark, 22, were killed in a head-on car accident on the Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles on the morning of April 4, 2007.[10]The crash occurred when an SUV crossed the median and struck Clark's Infiniti I30, causing the closure of the highway for eight hours.[5] Police determined that the SUV's driver,Hector Velazquez-Nava, had a blood alcohol level of three times the legal limit and was driving without a license.[11] He initially pleaded not guilty to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter,[12] but changed his plea to no contest in August. On October 12, 2007, Velasquez-Nava was sentenced to six years in prison under the terms of a plea agreement.[13] In addition, he may face deportation to his native Mexico, as he entered and was living in the United States illegally"[Bob Clark, Death, Wikipedia, June 29, 2011]
It would appear that Bob will not be making any more films.
James Fulford writes: We covered this death at the time it happened, and during an appeal in 2010, a reader wrote in asking if Hector Velazquez-Nava, who had been sentenced to 6 years in jail, was still in prison. I checked just now with the California Department of Corrections website, and I think he's out. Clark, of course, remains dead.
