The media reports say that Sutherland has a sister who was also adopted from Haiti. If not for the rape, this could be a feel-good story about how two destitute, Haitian orphans were rescued by good Americans. One might wonder how many Haitians have been rescued by moving to America. 

Nathan Sutherland is age 36 which means he was born in 1982. According to the Migration Policy Institute, MPI, 92,000 Haitians lived in the U.S. in 1980 and by 2015, that number increased to 676,000 Haitians who live mostly in Florida and New York, 70 percent of all. Wow, a seven-fold increase in Haitian refugees moving here since 1980. 

The Haitian diaspora reported by the Migration Policy Institute shows that thousands moved out of Haiti to many other countries besides the U.S. Millions of Haitians have left their country for places all over the world. Has Haiti been saved?

Many Haitians fled after the terrible earthquake in 2010 and about 60,000 Haitians were granted Temporary Protected Status, TPS, by the U.S. Most of the Haitians moved to America prior to the earthquake, however. President Trump  proposed extending the stay of TPS Haitians by three years but that proposal was rejected last week. If Congress and the President grant amnesty to the TPS 60,000, will Haiti be saved? 

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Eighty percent of the rural population lives in poverty. The Haitian life-span is 57 years and only half of the population is literate according to the World Bank.

Haiti's current population is just over 11 million people. In 2015, 676,000 Haitians lived in the U.S. That means that 6 percent of the population of Haiti has been rescued by America.

Has Haiti been saved? Will granting amnesty to 60,000 Haitians under "Temporary" Protected Status save Haiti?
