Here’s a graph showing cumulative gun homicide deaths from the Gun Violence Archive created for The Trace for 2020 vs. 2016–19. As you can see, 2020 murders were running along the high side of 2016–2019 deaths until late May. But after George Floyd’s death on Memorial Day, 2020’s murders radically diverge from the baseline rate.
The excess murders in 2020 from Memorial Day 2020 onward are comparable to all the lynchings in American history.
That’s a lot of murder.
