From the Hollywood Reporter:
Netflix Partners with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi for Three Projects Based on His Books (Exclusive)
9:00 AM PST 1/15/2021 by Rebecca SunThe antiracist scholar will collaborate with film and TV vets Roger Ross Williams, Mara Brock Akil and Chris Nee for adaptations of his bestsellers ‘Stamped from the Beginning,’ ‘Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You’ and ‘Antiracist Baby.’
What will Ka-Ching Kendi’s next book be: Stamped Baby? Antiracist Stamp? You Racist?
Historian Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s writings on antiracism rose to mainstream prominence last summer amid a widespread social reawakening about continued racial injustice in the nation, with four of his books landing on the New York Times bestseller list.
Now Netflix is partnering with the author and academic, who is the founding director of Boston University’s Center for Antiracist Research and one of Time’s 100 most influential people of 2020, to adapt his scholarship for the screen with three different projects intended to reach audiences of different ages.
… “I hope these films crystallize Dr. Kendi’s message that ‘the only thing wrong with Black people is that they think something is wrong with Black people’ and encourage everyone to fight for a more equitable society.
There’s no message that blacks need to hear more than that they have no faults whatsoever and all their problems are somebody else’s doing.
By the way, one theory is that Kendi, who had cancer recently, is so money-grubbing so feverishly for an honorable reason: perhaps he’s trying to pile up a huge estate for his heirs, kind of like how Anthony Burgess wrote his first five novels in one year after a doctor told him he had one year to live to leave his wife an inheritance. (Warning: not all great literary anecdotes are necessarily true.)
