Former First Lady Michelle Obama is touring to promote her new book. She shared a piece of advice she gives her daughters, now 21 and 24:
“I want my girls to spend some time with themselves, to develop some skills, to understand that they can make it with or without, that they can build their happiness with all the bells and whistles, and they can be happy if they choose to only focus on their career, to never have kids. I want to make their worlds bigger for them....”
Michelle Obama’s advice to her daughters and young women around the world: don’t rush into marriage by Nokuthula Zwane-Ejike, news24.com, November 25, 2022
Is she right that too many young people are “rushing” into marriage? The statistics say otherwise.
As a white advocate, maybe I shouldn’t be concerned that a black woman is advising her black daughters not to have children. The situation for blacks is different.
But whites get these messages, too. Young white women have been discouraged from following a traditional path for decades now, with the result being a drop in our population numbers. Who benefits from that?
We are not likely to return to an era in which a majority of women are stay-at-home mothers. Maybe that’s not even such a great idea.
But the feminist advice to put careers over marriage and children is wrong. It is not leading to societal health. It is not leading to happier, more fulfilled women. It is not leading to better-adjusted children.
The messages of modernity have been unable to completely extinguish basic biological urges. Women want stable, lasting relationships with men. They want to have babies.
Sometimes, in a conspiratorial haze, I think the whole of modern liberalism is trained on a single goal: fewer white babies.
Abortion? Check. Immigration? Check. Homosexuality? Check. Transgenderism? Double-check. Feminism? Check. Atheism? Check. White racial guilt? Check.
But tell a conservative that a woman won’t have children, and he’ll shrug and say, “Well, that’s her choice.”
