This NYT story has several things wrong with it, but the main point, which the writer and editor probably didn't even think about, is the reference to the late Trayvon Martin as the "Victim".

Defense in Trayvon Martin Case Raises Questions About the Victim’s Character

MIAMI — Intending to draw a fuller, perhaps more negative portrait of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teenager who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in early 2012, a lawyer for Mr. Zimmerman released new material on Thursday that depicted Mr. Martin as troubled at school and enamored of a “gangsta” culture.[More]

This picture, from Trayvon Martin's cell phone, is not mentioned by the NYT, I got it from the Daily Mail, which is rapidly becoming America's newspaper of record, since they regularly print stories about atrocities that the NYT ignores.

Gun: A photo of a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun were among those released

That's from George Zimmerman: Marijuana, guns and fighting: New photos and texts from Trayvon Martin's cell phone paint troubling picture of slain teen, Daily Mail, May 24, 2013.

But my main point here is that Trayvon Martin is not the victim here. He was the attacker.

He made a vicious, murderous attack on George Zimmerman, he was sitting on Zimmerman's chest pounding on him when Zimmerman fired in self-defense. Martin's body had injuries to the knuckles, and Zimmerman was battered and bloody. This is a photograph of Zimmerman the night of the attack.

So it's not Trayvon who's the victim, it's Zimmerman: victimof the attack, victim of malicious false prosecution, and finally victim of the New York Times's coverage.
