Previously: Trump’s Immigration Moratorium A Huge Win For America—Now He MUST Campaign On It
The Trump administration looks to make two positive changes to immigration policy this week.
It was reported Monday that President Trump is expected to refile his executive order scrapping the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) amnesty sometime this week. The Obama-enacted program legalizes tens of thousands of illegal aliens who came to America as minors. Last month, the Supreme Court struck down Trump’s previous DACA repeal because it allegedly didn’t follow proper procedures [Trump expected to refile paperwork to end DACA this week, by Brett Samuels, The Hill, July 6, 2020].
The new DACA recission will meet the Court’s standard and shows that Trump is not backing down on this matter.
Additionally, on Monday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced foreign students who attend colleges that plan to go fully online in the fall have to go home.
"Active students currently in the United States enrolled in such programs must depart the country or take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction to remain in lawful status," read a release from ICE's Student and Exchange Visitor Program. "If not, they may face immigration consequences including, but not limited to, the initiation of removal proceedings."
[ICE: Foreign Students Must Leave The U.S. If Their Colleges Go Online-Only This Fall, by Rachel Treisman, NPR, July 6, 2020].
There are an estimated over one million foreign students in America. Eight percent of American universities have announced they will operate primarily online in the fall; another 8.5 percent are weighing that option
This is a common-sense idea that shouldn’t offend any well-meaning American. Why should foreigners receive visas for schools where they do all their coursework online? They can do that in their home country. The two policies show that Trump wants to campaign as an immigration patriot this year. Along with the expanded immigration moratorium and decreasing migration, it’s clear the president is making dramatic changes to immigration policy—for the better.
Trump looks poised to run as an immigration patriot this election and he has the results to show for it. He just needs to remember to talk about it more than criminal justice reform.
