Golf has four major championships annually, with one played in Britain (the Open in July) and three in America: the Masters in April, the Professional Golfers Association championship in May (recently moved from sleepy August), and the U.S. Open in June. The fifth biggest tournament, the Tournament Players Championship, is also in America (in March). The Ryder Cup team competition is split between America and Europe. Only the President’s Cup visits Australia and the like.
The PGA is a good tournament, but it’s clearly #4 of the big four, lacking in specific interest. Why not occasionally send it overseas to Continental Europe (e.g., Spain), Australia (e.g., Royal Melbourne), Japan, and South Korea? Its new mid-May date seems to work well with prime golf seasons in several big golf countries.
To make getting to Australia or East Asia easier when the PGA is occasionally held there, the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii could be moved in those years from January to the week before the PGA Championship.
