From the Washington Post:
Ibram was a bright but underachieving senior at his Northern Virginia high school. His GPA was below 3.0; his SAT scores were just above 1000. He thought he wasn’t smart enough for college, even though he had been admitted to historically black Florida A&M University.
At Florida A&M, he went on to double major in African American Studies and Magazine Production.
And the rest is history …
This year’s Genius Grants went overwhelmingly to Geniuses of Color (especially to the Color Black). But they always find at least one white male scientist who really is a genius:
Landscapes record a planet’s past and offer clues about its future. Our research in Geomorphology – the scientific study of landscapes – deciphers these records to discover how geology, climate, and life intertwine to shape the surfaces of Earth and other planets and moons. We use fieldwork, mathematical and computational modeling, remote-sensing and spacecraft data, and laboratory experiments. Most of our work falls into three areas: Landscape Evolution, Planetary Surfaces, and the Human Landscape.
