The unmentioned dimension here is of course the massive competition American youth is facing from heavy immigration (both illegal and legal) continuing at a pace unprecedented in such a serious downturn. Many recent immigrants are young, others are confined to entry-level jobs by poor English, and many more are supplying the labor markets with a deluge of Anchor Baby children.
