Walt Disney theme parks will be closing Splash Mountain in early 2023 because of its source material, Song of the South, a film released in 1946 based on the Uncle Remus stories, a collection of didactic Black folktales from the Antebellum South. 21,000 people signed a pledge on Change.org demanding Disney replace the ride with one themed around the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog, which features a Black princess.
Song of the South is set during the Reconstruction era and tells the story of a young white boy named Johnny who is unhappy and homesick while visiting his grandmother's plantation. Uncle Remus, a former slave, tells Johnny stories about a mischievous rabbit named Brer Rabbit, who outwits Brer Fox and Brer Bear, to help cheer him up.
The film was praised for its animation and music, grossing $65 million during its box office run, and even winning an academy award for its most famous song, “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah”.
The film features positive and uplifting themes, such as the importance of family, the power of storytelling, and the value of hard work. These themes are universal and resonate with audiences of all backgrounds.
It is clear that Disney's decision to reimagine Splash Mountainreflects a shift in the company's political views over the years. While Walt Disney was a well-known anti-Communist and the company's early content often upheld traditional family values, the current leadership at Disney is much more diverse with deep financial ties with China.
Paul Kersey writes for VDARE.com:
We will know we have not only won, but our past, present, and future is truly liberated for good when Disney + streams Song of the South and a 4K version is released. And it will be released.
