Steve Sailer's review of Jared Taylor's White Identity made a very politically incorrect argument to make a relatively politically correct point. Namely, in arguing against the utility of any sort of White racial consciousness, in favor of a multiracial American nationalism ("citizenism"), he brought up the taboo subject of Jewish political power.
Almost as an aside, Sailer said that White Identity has slim political prospects because "more Jews don't want it to happen than do want it to happen."
Jared Taylor's American Renaissance organization has appealed to Jews with some success. But Sailer believes most Jews think they have no reason to support White Identity because they are apparently doing quite well in the emerging multicultural regime.
Sailer argues that the temporary concern that neoconservative Jews had about "Black Power" pretty much dissipated when the Jews realized—as most upper middle class whites did—that they could simply move away from blacks. Similarly, the neoconservatives have stopped criticizing Affirmative Action when they realized quotas were not going to be applied to Jews.
I am a Jew and a great admirer of Sailer. But I think he is wrong both to suggest that opposition of Jews makes white identity politics impossible, and that it is not in the interests of Jews to align ourselves with America's historic European majority.
Whether or not Jews are responsible for the Open Borders, multicultural mess that the United States and the West finds itself into has long been debated among those on the right.
And it is undeniable that Jews are vastly overrepresented in a number of anti-Western political and intellectual movements, such as liberalizing our immigration policy, suppressing legitimate scientific study of racial differences, and promoting anti-white discrimination.
It is also true that the motivations of many of these anti-white Jewish activists was not any lofty universalistic sentiments, but what Sailer aptly calls an irrational "The Cossacks Are Coming!" reflex.
Many Jews do believe that a majority-white gentile country always presents a risk of resorting to anti-Semitism. They promote multiculturalism and a demographic war against whites as the solution.
Earl Raab of Brandeis University's Institute for Jewish Advocacy was very frank about this motivation. After the Census Bureau first reported that Whites would become a minority in their own country, he gloated,
"We have tipped beyond the point where a Nazi-Aryan party will be able to prevail in this country."We [Jews] have been nourishing the American climate of opposition to bigotry for about half a century. That climate has not yet been perfected, but the heterogeneous nature of our population tends to make it irreversible—and makes our constitutional constraints against bigotry more practical than ever."[Earl Raab, San Francisco Jewish Bulletin, July 23, 1993, quoted in Alien Nation, p. 120]
In Alien Nation, Peter Brimelow called this quote "almost laughable in its apparent affirmation of anti-Semitic stereotypes." Unfortunately, stereotypes are based on reality, and Raab is far from the only Jew who holds these feelings.
But these feelings are not rational. As Brimelow noted:
"Actually, Earl Raab's argument is foolish even on its own terms. It is precisely in the most diverse societies that people are the most conscious of ethnicity and race. It was in the Austro-Hungarian Empire , where the Germans were a minority exposed to Slavs, Magyars and Jews from the shtetls of Galicia, that anti-Semitism first became a viable electoral force—and Adolf Hitler was born and spent his formative years.Conversely, Norman Podhoretz, writing in his autobiography Making It [pp. 186-87] about his years with the U.S. army in Germany, much of it spent with white Southerners, reports his "amazement" on discovering that a "hillbilly buddy" had simply never realized that he, Podhoretz, was Jewish.
This emerged one night outside a Frankfurt bar. Podhoretz was trying to explain why he had felt obliged to insist they both leave after he had got into a row (in German, which of course only Podhoretz understood) with a former Waffen SS man.
"He was both fascinated and shocked," Podhoretz says of his friend, "but it took him exactly one second to recover. 'Let's go back in there and kill the dirty kraut bastard,' he said."
Steve Sailer agrees that Jews opposed to White Identity is are being irrational, but he believes there are a rational reasons for their opposition. First:
Sailer is referring to the fact that wealthy whites benefit from mass immigration because of cheap labor, which enables them to hire servant while they live in gated communities and send their kids to private schools. Poor whites get none of the benefits and have to live with minorities.
This may be true, but as the country gets more and more non-white, the private schools and gated communities will become more expensive (a process perhaps temporarily masked by the recent recession), affordable only by super rich. At some point, the social and political costs of mass immigration will be impossible to escape.
Furthermore, these same problems apply to "citizenism"—which also entails cutting immigration and limiting affirmative action to achieve the same short term of effect of disproportionately helping lower income whites. So if this is a reason for Jews not to support white identity, then it is just as much a reason to oppose citizenism.
Second:
Here Sailer is confusing whether a policy is good for a group with whether advocating that policy is good for an individual. There is no doubt that Jews like Michael Levin and Rabbi Mayer Schiller have gotten nothing but grief for their views, and would have been better served toeing the typical Jewish line. But this is of course true of anyone on the Right, Jew or gentile.
And, as above, this objection could equally apply to "citizenism". In fact, Sailer has himself said that "If I had to do it again, I would have picked a pen name." I assume this sentiment would not have been different if he was Jewish
Certainly, retreating to "citizenism" isn't going to suddenly make anti-white Jews switch sides.
Even the most generic American nationalism leads to fears from both blacks (whom Sailer seems eager to unite with under his idea of "citizenism" against other non-white immigration.) The black comedian Chris Rock once joked about why he felt uncomfortable about Americans getting "overly patriotic" post 9-11.
"[Imitating a white Middle American:] 'I'm American man, I'm American. F—ck all these foreigners!' And that was cool. 'I'm American man, I'm American. Fuck the French!' That was cool. 'I'm American man, I'm American. F— all these Arabs!' And that was cool. Then they went to 'I'm American man, I'm American. Fuck all these illegal aliens!' Then I started listening. Cause I know n-ggas and Jews is next. It's like any day now. That train's never late." [watch on YouTube] (VDARE.com note: Expletives and racial slurs deleted because we have enough d—n trouble with corporate censorware as it is)
Rock is not Jewish (though the producers of this joke may well have been). But the sentiment behind this joke is widely held by Jews who extend the "The Cossacks Are Coming" not just to race realism, but even the blandest conservative issues.
One need only look at basically Jewish-run outfits like the Southern Poverty Law Center ($PLC to VDARE.com), who are just as eager to destroy self-consciously moderate non-racial opposition to mass immigration from groups such as the Center for Immigration Studies or Progressives For Immigration Reform as they are to shut down American Renaissance.
There is no doubt that the Jewish predilection for multiculturalism is a huge problem. But the solution is to both change the minds of Jews towards—and reduce the power of those who implacably oppose the interests of the historic American nation.
